The women’s organizations observed the One Billion Rising 2022 global campaign last March 2022. The Women’s Summit on March 5, 2022 culminated in a dance of the participants to the song of One Billion Rising Filipino version. The members of the Tungkop Women’s Organization also did a dance to observe the One Billion 2022 campaign during its monthly meeting on March 23, 2022.
The One Billion Rising is a global campaign, founded by Eve Ensler, to end rape and sexual violence against women. It was started in 2012 as part of the Valentine’s Day movement. The “billion” refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, or about one billion. The past year has seen lockdowns, worsening economic crisis, worsening poverty, ongoing destruction of the environment, health crisis, and calamities. There were also continued reported cases of domestic violence, abuse and exploitation. These events all adversely affect women’s rights and freedom. The dance is a collective expression of protest against these injustices that trample on the women’s rights.
